Budapest, Days 1–2
Board on the Pest side. Parliament seen from the water, the Chain Bridge on foot, and an afternoon given over to the Széchenyi baths.

Most river cruises will give you a craft hour in a side room, somewhere between the art auction and the second sitting of dinner. Passage Club does the opposite, and does it once a year. We take the whole boat.
For seven days in November 2027, MS Aurelia belongs to one hundred and fifty knitters and to nobody else. Every deck chair, every window seat, every long table at supper. There is no one aboard to explain yourself to, and no one wondering why you packed four projects for a single week. The woman across from you at breakfast is winding a skein of her own.
That is the whole idea, and it is not a small one. A charter is what turns a holiday into a community: mornings ashore in Budapest, Vienna and Passau, lunch as the water goes by, and long bright afternoons with Margit Sørensen and a hundred and fifty pairs of needles. You board among strangers who happen to share one thread. You step off knowing exactly who you will be casting on with next November.
The club keeps a simple order from morning to night, and keeps it seven times over. Nothing is compulsory and nothing clashes. That is the point of taking the whole ship.
A guided morning in whichever town the ship woke in. Small groups, a walking pace, and back aboard in time for lunch.
The lines are cast off while the soup is served. Long tables, one conversation, and the valley moving past the glass.
Margit in the lounge for the afternoon workshop; or a chair by the window and a project of your own. The club counts both.
Dinner, then the needles come out again until somebody notices the hour. This is where the week’s friendships are made.
There are no sea days on a river. You are never more than an hour from a town, and never obliged to step into one.
Six river towns in seven days, taken against the current. You unpack once. The ship carries the club up the Danube, one seal at a time.
Board on the Pest side. Parliament seen from the water, the Chain Bridge on foot, and an afternoon given over to the Széchenyi baths.
A capital small enough for one morning: up the castle hill, down through the old town, and coffee beneath the arcades.
The Ringstrasse at a walking pace, the Hofburg for those who want it, and a coffeehouse hour with the project bag open on the table.
The Wachau closes in. A blue abbey tower, vineyards in terraces, and apricot orchards the whole length of the valley.
The Benedictine abbey on its bluff, the painted library within, and the long green view back down the river we came up.
Three rivers meet: the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz. Baroque lanes, the old town above the water, and the last evening aboard.
Edition No. 01 · MS Aurelia · Budapest to Passau, November 2027
Ports and mooring times as sealed with the operator. The river keeps the final say, and the club would not have it otherwise.
MS Aurelia carries one hundred and fifty guests: small enough to moor in the middle of a town, large enough for a lounge to spread out in. For this week there is no other party aboard and no other programme.

Knitwear designer · Twenty years teaching · Aboard all seven days
Margit designs in Bergen and teaches nearly everywhere else. Her work is Nordic colourwork with a light hand: the steeks that frighten people, taught so calmly that by Wednesday they frighten nobody.
She is not a visiting lecturer. She sails the whole week, leads the afternoon workshops, and sits down at your table with her own project when there is nothing left to teach.
Appointed Host · Edition No. 01
Passage Club is small by design. You will meet all of us: at the pier in Budapest, or certainly by Wednesday.
Founder
Twenty years chartering ships for people who share one thing. He chooses the boats, and he is particular about them.
Voyage Director
Aboard every edition. When a mooring moves at six in the morning, the day has been rewritten by seven.
Guest Host
Cabins, dietary needs, solo travellers, and a seating plan that nobody is meant to notice.
Dear knitter,
The club began on somebody else’s cruise. Two of us shared a table with a very good view and nothing in common, and we spent the evening talking about the one woman aboard who had brought her knitting, and how much better the week would have been had the whole ship been her.
So we built that ship. Not a cruise with a craft corner bolted to the side, but a boat taken from bow to stern for one shared thing, where nobody need explain why they are counting under their breath at dinner. Edition No. 01 is knitting, on the Danube, in November, when the towns are quiet, the light is low and gold, and everybody is glad of wool.
There are one hundred and fifty places. We should be glad if one of them were yours.
The Passage Club founders
You have been the only one knitting in the departure lounge. You have explained a steek to somebody who never asked. You have travelled with people who were perfectly pleasant and entirely uninterested.
This is the other thing. One hundred and fifty people who already know why you packed three projects for seven days, and who will hold opinions on all three by Thursday.
Come by yourself or bring your people. Twelve single cabins carry no supplement, and nobody dines alone.
It gives well. We send a printed Edition No. 01 card to put into their hands, and settle the details with you rather than them.
Eight or more, and we hold your cabins together, keep you a table, and give the group a workshop hour of its own.
One fare, settled before you sail. We would rather say now what is not in it than hand you a folio on the last morning.

A river runs one way, so the journey does too. Book an open-jaw ticket into Budapest and out of Munich: usually cheaper than two returns, and always less trouble.
Transfers on both days are in the fare. Give us your flight numbers when you book and we will watch them.
No. Margit teaches in three streams each afternoon: one for those who want to be stretched, one for those who want to be shown, and one that is simply a comfortable chair and company. Some guests learn a new technique; some knit the same sock all week. The club counts both as taking part.
Most of the club is. Twelve single cabins carry no supplement, seating is open at every meal, and a chartered ship is the easiest place on earth to fall into conversation. Say so when you book and we will introduce you to a few people on the first evening.
Yes, and they will not be bored. The excursions are the same for everyone, the ship is small and comfortable, and the sun deck has a fine view of Austria. They need only accept that from three o’clock the lounge belongs to wool.
A small shop carries the yarn for Margit’s pattern, with needles, notions and the things people always forget. A yarn stop is also written into the Vienna and Bratislava mornings, because we know why you came.
Excursions run at an unhurried pace, usually two to three kilometres over a morning, with seats and coffee along the way. Every town has a shorter option, two have a gentle coach alternative, and the ship has a lift between decks. Tell us what you need when you book and we will plan around it.
Your deposit is refundable in full until 30 April 2027. After that the usual scale applies, and your travel insurance should cover the rest, which is why we ask you to carry it.
Whether the walking suits you, whether your group may sit together, whether November on the Danube is truly as we describe it. A person answers, usually the same day.
Not yet ready?
Join the list and we will write when Edition No. 02 is sealed: a few times a year, never more.
Thank you. You are on the list.
