Most river cruises will give you a craft hour in a side room, somewhere between the art auction and the second sitting of dinner. Passage Club does the opposite, and does it once a year. We take the whole boat.
For seven days in November 2027, MS Aurelia belongs to one hundred and fifty knitters and to nobody else. Every deck chair, every window seat, every long table at supper. There is no one aboard to explain yourself to, and no one wondering why you packed four projects for a single week. The woman across from you at breakfast is winding a skein of her own.
That is the whole idea, and it is not a small one. A charter is what turns a holiday into a community: mornings ashore in Budapest, Vienna and Passau, lunch as the water goes by, and long bright afternoons with Margit Sørensen and a hundred and fifty pairs of needles. You board among strangers who happen to share one thread. You step off knowing exactly who you will be casting on with next November.
Annex A to Edition No. 01 · A Day Aboard · MS Aurelia
The same order is kept on all seven days, and none of it is compulsory. The ship is chartered whole so that the timetable answers to knitters and to no one else.

There are no days at sea on a river. The ship is never more than an hour from a town, and no member is ever obliged to go into one.

Six towns in seven days, taken against the current, which is the slow way and the intended one. Unpack once; the ship carries the room upriver with you.

Annex C to Edition No. 01 · The Ship & Cabins · MS Aurelia
MS Aurelia carries one hundred and fifty guests, which is small enough to tie up in the middle of a town and large enough for a lounge to spread out in. For this passage there is no other party aboard, no other programme, and nothing else the lounge is for at four o’clock.

Annex D to Edition No. 01 · Your Host
Knitwear designer · Teacher of twenty years · Aboard all seven days
Margit designs in Bergen and teaches nearly everywhere else. Her work is Nordic colourwork with a light hand: the steeks that people dread, shown so calmly that by midweek nobody dreads them.
She is appointed for the whole passage, not for a single lecture. She sails all seven days, keeps the afternoon workshops, and when there is nothing to teach she brings her own project to your table.
Annex E to Edition No. 01 · Behind the Charter
Passage Club is kept small on purpose. You will meet each of us, most likely on the pier at Budapest and certainly by the middle of the week.

Dear knitter,
This began on somebody else’s cruise. Two of us had been seated at a table with a fine view and nothing else in common, and the conversation turned to the one woman on board who had brought her knitting, and how much better the week would have gone had the whole ship been like her.
So we built that ship instead. Not a cruise with a craft corner tacked on, but a boat chartered from bow to stern for one shared thing, where nobody need explain why they are counting under their breath at dinner. Edition No. 01 is knitting, on the Danube, in November, when the towns are quiet, the light is low and gold, and everyone is glad of wool.
There are one hundred and fifty places. We would be glad if one of them were yours.
Annex F to Edition No. 01 · Who it is for
You have been the only person knitting in the departure lounge. You have explained a steek to someone who did not ask. You have travelled in perfectly pleasant company that was entirely uninterested.
This is the other arrangement: one hundred and fifty people who already know why you packed three projects for seven days, and who will hold views on all three before the week is out.
Come alone or bring your people. Twelve single cabins carry no supplement, and no member dines by themselves.
A place aboard gives well. The Club sends a printed Edition No. 01 card to put into their hands, and settles the particulars with you rather than with them.
Bring eight or more and your cabins are held together, a table is kept for you, and the party has a workshop hour of its own.

One fare, settled before you sail. The Club would rather set out now what the fare does not cover than present a folio on the last morning.
Edition No. 01 · Knitting the Danube
From $4,950 per knitter
A cabin is held against a deposit of $500, refundable in full until 30 April 2027. The balance falls due sixty days before sailing.
Annex H to Edition No. 01 · Getting There
The river runs one way, so the journey does too. An open-jaw ticket into Budapest and out of Munich is usually cheaper than two returns, and always less trouble.

Annex I to Edition No. 01 · Questions
No. Margit teaches in three streams each afternoon: one for those who wish to be stretched, one for those who wish to be shown, and one that is simply a comfortable chair and company. Some members learn a new technique; some knit the same sock all week. Both are the right answer.
Most members are. There are twelve single cabins without supplement, seating is open at every meal, and a ship chartered whole is the easiest place in the world to fall into conversation. If you would like to be introduced to a few people on the first evening, say so when you book and it will be arranged.
Yes, and they will not be bored. The excursions are the same for everyone, the ship is small and comfortable, and the sun deck has an excellent view of Austria. They need only accept that from three o’clock the lounge belongs to wool.
There is a small shop carrying the yarn for Margit’s pattern, together with needles, notions and the things people always forget. A yarn stop is also built into the Vienna and Bratislava mornings, since we know what you came for.
Excursions go at an unhurried pace, usually two to three kilometres over a morning, with seats and coffee built in. Every town has a shorter option and two have a gentle coach alternative. The ship has a lift between decks. Tell us what you need when you book and it will be planned around, rather than apologised for later.
Your deposit is refundable in full until 30 April 2027. After that date the usual scale applies, and your travel insurance should answer for the rest, which is why the Club asks you to hold it.

Whether the walking will suit you, whether your party can sit together, whether November on the Danube is truly as good as we say. A person answers, usually the same day.
