Luggage Label · round 13 · the route

A · Six views, one per label

Each port label gains a view of its town at its head, printed in the label’s own ink, the way old hotel labels carried the view. The pictures are chosen as one shape each: the Parliament dome, the white castle, the cathedral spire, the blue tower, the abbey’s twin towers, the twin green domes.

The Route

Upstream, and unhurried.

Six river towns over eight days, taken against the current — which is the slow way, and the point. You unpack once; the ship follows you up the Danube.

The dome and spires of the Hungarian Parliament against the hills of Buda

Days 1–2

Budapest

Board on the Pest side. Parliament from the water, the Chain Bridge on foot, and a long afternoon in the Széchenyi baths.

Bratislava’s white castle with its four corner towers against a blue sky

Day 3

Bratislava

A small capital you can walk in a morning: the castle hill, the crooked old town, and coffee under the arcades.

The gothic spire of St Stephen’s Cathedral against the sky

Day 4

Vienna

The Ringstrasse at your own pace, the Hofburg if you like it, and a proper coffeehouse hour with the project bag open.

Dürnstein’s blue abbey tower above the river

Day 5

Dürnstein

Into the Wachau. A blue abbey tower, terraced vineyards, and apricot orchards the whole way up the valley.

The twin towers of Melk Abbey under a blue sky

Day 6

Melk

The Benedictine abbey on its bluff, the painted library, and the long green view back down the river.

The twin green domes of St Stephen’s Cathedral, Passau, on its hill

Days 7–8

Passau

Where the Danube, Inn and Ilz run together. Baroque lanes, the old town above the water, and the last evening aboard.

Ports and mooring times as planned. The Danube keeps the final say, and we would not have it any other way.

B · One valley, the labels stay paper

A single wide photograph of the Wachau bend across the section, scalloped like a label, captioned by hand. The six labels beneath it stay as they are. Fewer, bigger, no small-picture risk; the section says one river rather than six towns.
